The shape explains it: the beach and the marina sit at the bottom, and white apartment blocks are stepped up the slopes on both sides, which gives many of them a view and most of their guests a climb home.
The beach is the centre of the place, and the island's tourism board describes it as ideal for swimming and very safe. The marina lies beside it, and over the headland to the west is Playa de Amadores, the neighbouring beach. From Las Palmas the Cabildo's directions are 72 kilometres down the GC-1 to exit 62.
It is a purpose-built resort rather than a town, and the reasons to stay are the sea, the marina and the position between the Maspalomas coast and the harbour at Puerto de Mogán. What it asks of you is legs: anything not on the valley floor is uphill, so it is worth checking where a place to stay sits on the slope before booking it.
Distances along this coast are short. From Puerto Rico, Arguineguín is nine minutes east, Puerto de Mogán 17 minutes west and Maspalomas 21 minutes, and the airport is under forty minutes by the routed drive.
