Gran Canaria Shopping
Shopping in Gran Canaria
Canarian food, rum and crafts to take home, the shopping streets of Triana in Las Palmas, and the markets of the south.
The Canary Islands charge their own sales tax, the IGIC, rather than Spanish VAT, so spirits, tobacco and perfume are worth comparing with the price at home; check your own country's customs allowances before filling a case. Las Palmas is the island's main shopping city, with Triana as its older shopping district and the capital's larger centres beyond it.
In the south, shopping means the commercial centres of the resorts and the markets, the Friday market at Puerto de Mogán among them. The more interesting things to buy are the island's own: goat cheese, mojo sauces, gofio, Canarian rum and honey rum, almond sweets from the mountains, and crafts such as basketry, embroidery and pottery made in the traditional way. Buy food from shops that will pack it for travel, and check what your airline allows in the cabin.
