Getting Around Gran Canaria
One airport on the east coast, the GC-1 motorway south to the resorts, buses, taxis, ferries and hire cars.
Everything starts at the airport. Gran Canaria has one, on the east coast in the municipalities of Telde and Ingenio, and it is closer to the resorts than people expect: the drive to Playa del Inglés takes 27 minutes, Maspalomas about half an hour, Las Palmas 27 minutes and Puerto de Mogán about three quarters of an hour. The GC-1 carries most of that traffic, from Las Palmas past the airport and down the coast to Mogán, and the GC-2 follows the north coast.
Buses and taxis cover the towns and the coast, but they thin out in the interior: the bus line linking the south coast with the Roque Nublo trailhead runs three times a day. A hire car is the difference between seeing the resorts and seeing the island. The catch is the mountains, which are slow for their distance, and parking, which in central Las Palmas means paid blue bays with a two-hour limit.
