Where to Eat in Gran Canaria
Canarian cooking in the villages and the capital, fish at the harbours, and a broad international trade along the southern resort coast.
Eating on Gran Canaria follows the shape of the island. The south coast from San Agustín to Meloneras holds most of the beds, so it holds most of the restaurants too: international kitchens, grills, pizzerias and sea-facing terraces aimed at people on holiday, with Puerto Rico and Puerto de Mogán carrying the same trade further west.
Canarian cooking is easier to find away from the resort strip, in Las Palmas, in the northern towns and in the mountain villages. That is where menus lean on papas arrugadas with red and green mojo, goat cheese, gofio and fresh Atlantic fish. It is worth planning a meal around a day out rather than hoping to stumble on one, because the distances are real: Teror is over an hour's drive from Maspalomas, and Agaete longer still.
